Housing and Household Characteristics:

In the upazila, there are 45456 households. Distribution of households by type shows that there are 98.78% dwelling units, 0.73% institutional and 0.49% other units in the upazila.

Household Size:

The average household size (dwelling) for the uazila is 5.1 persons. For rural area the size is 5.1 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e., 5.2.

Housing:

 It is found in the table that the housing condition of Kamalganj upazila is dominanted by kutcha houses. The table shows 7.24% main house of the dwelling households are jhupri, 68.29% are kutcha, 17.95% households are semi-pucka and the remaining 6.52% are pucka houses. In urban area the condition is improved. In urban area 6.94% main house of the dwelling households are found pucka, 16.77% semi pucka , 64.94% kutcha and the remaining 11.35% are jhupri as against 6.46%, 18.09%, 68.69% and 6.76% respectively in rural area .

Source of Drinking Water:

In Kamalganj uazila the source of drinking water of 70.00% dwelling households is tube-well water, 2.23% is tap water, 3.31% is deep tube-well water, 7.77% is pond water and the remaining 16.69% is water from other sources.

Sanitation:

In the upazila 25.87% of dwelling households have sanitary latrines with 23.66% in rural area and 44.61% in urban area. A total of 56.62% of the households have non-sanitary latrines with 57.97% in rural area and 45.20% in urban area. In this uazila 17.51% of the dwelling households have no toilet facility.

Access to Electricity:

All the 9 uions of the uazila have been brought under Rural Electrification Programme. However, a total of 26.38% of the dwelling households reported to have electricity connection in the entire Upazila.

Ownership of Agricultural Land :

In Kamalganj uazila, 43.62% of the dwelling households own and 56.38% do not own agricultural land. Percentage of ownership of agricultural land is 47.42% in urban area as against 43.17% in rural area.

Main Source of Household Income :

In the upazila, 39.77% of the dwelling households depend on agriculture as the main source of household income with 23.67%, cropping, livestock, forestry and fishery 16.10% as agricultural labour. Other sources of household income are non-agricultural labour (14.81%), business (8.96%), employment (5.09%), construction (1.43%), religious service (0.49%), Industry (5.30%), rent and remittance (2.07%), transport and communication (2.46%) and others (19.62%). In urban area the main sources of household income are employment (8.82%), construction (1.10%), rent and remittance (0.21%), religious service (0.34%), business (18.56%), non-agricultural labour (9.77%), Industry (0.65%), transport and communication (3.84%) and others (56.71%). In rural area the main source of household in come are agriculture (39.32%) of which cultivation, forestry and fishery (23.35%) and agricultural labour (15.97%). Other sources are non-agricultural labour (15.41%), business (7.82%), employment (4.65%), transport and communication (2.30%) construction (1.47%), Industry (5.84%), rent and remittance (2.29%), religious service (0.50%) and others (20.40%)
